Vanilla
The vanilla of Madagascar is from the planifolia type called as well fragrans, it is cultivated according to the Bourbon method with a manual pollination procedure.
For a long time Madagascar was the indisputable number one of the world vanilla, supplying to the rest of the world the best and the largest quantity of vanilla. At the beginning of the 90’s a slow economical and local recession took place due to new competitive countries (Uganda, India an essentially Indonesia) and political changes.
Despite the declining prices of the vanilla, some producers and packer decided to continue with difficulty that unique activity. In front of an unprecedented crisis, the production of vanilla was deeply damaged with the lost of motivation and the agricultural changes. Nevertheless some stayed faithful by trying to improve the conditions of production and using this naturally generous earth for the orchid. Thanks to that effort, today we still can find different kinds of high quality vanilla from the big island. And perhaps now more than before, with stronger experience, we are able to satisfy the most rigorous clients.
Furthermore, some research are undertaken to improve the quality and the productivity of the vanilla like the crossbreeding between hapapa and the pompana species. One is to improve the resistance to diseases and mushrooms, the other one is to increase the gustatory qualities.
